The Mobility Data Space

Data is the most important raw material of the 21st century. Michael Schäfer, Managing Director of the Mobility Data Space (MDS), is convinced of this. Like other raw materials, they are traded and processed - a process the MDS is here to promote and support.

Since its establishment in 2020, the Mobility Data Space has developed into a steadily growing catalog for mobility data. The platform serves to connect participating partners and facilitate the exchange of valuable data. In the process, the data itself remains with the owners. They decide to whom and under what conditions the data is passed on to and, in turn, receive full transparency about how their data is put to use. A platform for data exchange at eye level. The goal: With the help of the data catalog, forward-looking mobility services are to be promoted and data-based business models in the mobility sector are to be further developed or newly created.

The Guests

One of the institutions involved in the MDS is acatech, the German Academy of Science and Engineering, which has taken the lead in managing the data space. Andreas Heindl is a political scientist and has led the Mobility Data Space project for acatech since 2020. Birgit Heinke is a computer scientist and environmental scientist and was Scientific Advisor Mobility for the Mobility Data Space until June 2022. She has recently joined Q PERIOR as a Senior Consultant in the Transport and Logistics Team.

These questions are discussed in the DILAX Lab

In our DILAX Lab on November 17 at 2 p.m. CET, host Christine Quast and her two guests will delve deeper into the topic and work out together:

  • What is the Mobility Data Space?
  • Who can and should use the platform?
  • How does the data exchange work?
  • What projects already exist where data has been successfully shared and used?
  • What is the difference between the Mobility Data Space and the BMDV's Mobilithek?

Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz on August 29 2022

„Let's take the mobility of the future. Data will play the decisive role in this [...]. That's why we need a uniform, cross-border European mobility data space as quickly as possible. We have made a start in Germany with the Mobility Data Space. Let's link it with all of Europe. It is open to everyone who wants to make a difference. In this way, we can become a global pioneer.“
