Counting accurately
How many passengers are using the services of a public transit operator is an important key figure. It is relevant for fleet management, personnel and route planning, the introduction and evaluation of new stops and for service quality. Within transport associations, the passenger count is also a prerequisite for an important business process - revenue sharing. The more accurate the count, the fairer the distribution.

Making public transit more attractive
In this DILAX Lab, Julia Beumer talks to one of the creators of VDV 457, Dr Manfred Ritschel. In his career, he was operations director and technical director of Dresdener Verkehrsbetriebe and has been involved with automatic passenger counting in public transit for close to 20 years. Today, he chairs the VDV Working Group on Counting Accuracy and is also a shareholder and senior consultant at TCAC-GmbH in Dresden.
For real-time and object recognition
How exactly is counting accuracy defined? What role does it play in real-time occupancy and what are the differences between passenger and object counting? The VDV, the Association of German Transport Companies, is currently working on an update of VDV standard 457, which will also include specifications for object detection.
"When you have 900 million euros in revenue to divide up, a deviation in counting accuracy of 1-2% already makes a lot of money," says Dr. Ritschel. And indeed, there are nationwide efforts to bring the accuracy of measurements and thus the fairness of revenue sharing into a new era. Baden-Württemberg is the first federal state to solely allow demand data-based models for the calculation. These can be collected in a time-consuming and cost-intensive manner via numerous manual counts - or automatically with an APC system.
