Urban mobility has become very complex. There are so many reasons to be on the move. However, buses and trains are not easily accessible for everyone. Public transport is not well prepared for passengers with special mobility requirements. That's why the demand for counting sensors with object recognition is growing.
Many communities recognize the need for changing public transport. For making it more attractive and inclusive. And to do this, you should count what has not been given enough attention so far: passengers in wheelchairs, passengers with strollers and passengers with bicycles - and soon passengers with large pieces of luggage or with dogs.
The DILAX Structured Light Sensor-1000 is the answer to these new requirements with a groundbreaking new technology concept. The optical 3D sensor uses structured light for automatic passenger counting (APC). It even counts objects such as bicycles and wheelchairs. This local data helps transport operators and their clients, such as local authorities, to identify their passengers' real needs and to offer better services to cater to them.

Structured Light Sensor
The DILAX SLS-1000 is a 3D optical sensor that uses structured light to count passengers with an accuracy of 99%. It is able to detect more than other sensors. Due to the high pixel count in a given space, the sensor can identify objects such as bicycles and wheelchairs and count them in real time with a high level of accuracy.

Smart AI
The new sensor can learn to see. It is equipped with artificial intelligence to accurately detect not only passengers but also object classes such as wheelchairs. In the future, all you will need is a firmware update to include a new object class. Currently, the sensor is being taught to identify baby strollers.

Excellent data protection
Wherever you collect personal data, you need consistent data protection. We integrated it in the technological design of the DILAX SLS-1000 right from the beginning. No subsequent anonymization of data is necessary because the sensor works anonymously to begin with and does not store any real images. We call this Privacy by Design.

Extremely reliable
The DILAX SLS-1000 is an active sensor, which means that it continues to count precisely even if the light fails or the sun dazzles. Of course, the sensor meets all standards for use in buses and trains. The entire concept is designed for durability and low susceptibility to failure. Putting it into operation after installation is faster than ever as well.
Structured Light
Future-oriented technology for mobility providers
Structured light has been used as an optical measuring method for three-dimensional detection of objects and surfaces for a long time. Now, the new DILAX SLS-1000 sensor is using structured light for passenger counting for the first time. The most important advantages offered and supported by the new technology are high accuracy, data protection, independence from light sources and the learning capability to detect further object classes.

DILAX SLS-1000
The innovative sensor is mounted in the entrance area above the vehicle doors. With Structured Light Technology, it counts all people entering and exiting the vehicle and additionally objects such as bicycles and wheelchairs extremely precisely and reliably.

Ethernet Backbone
The cable network, together with the switches, forms the infrastructure for data exchange between sensors and the APC Master.

Switch
A switch serves as a node in the cable network. The coupling element ensures that the count data from the sensors reaches the APC master.

APC Master
The APC Master collects the counting data from all sensors in the vehicle. This mini-computer stores the raw data enriched with additional information such as time stamp, door signal and GPS coordinates. It can transmit the APC data in real time via an antenna to the landside or alternatively to the on-board computer.

Antenna
The antenna is connected to the APC master and/or on-board computer and transmits the data to the landside server - in real time, at each stop or at other specified time intervals.

DILAX Citisense
The analytics software DILAX Citisense processes APC data to control and analyze the performance of transit operations. Supplemented by other data sources, such as timetable and calendar data, APC data is valuable for traffic planning and modeling of new traffic concepts.

DILAX Seat Occupancy Management
DILAX Seat Occupancy Management (SOM for short) optimally controls occupancy in vehicles. Sensors under the individual seats record their occupancy status in real time. The sensors do not react to objects such as backpacks or bags placed on the seat, but only detect people.

DILAX Tracking
DILAX Tracking uses device hashing to record passenger movements in a GDPR -compliant and anonymous manner by tapping data from mobile devices. In combination with APC data, an origin-destination matrix can be created for the traffic area to analyze passenger usage behavior.

Board Computer
The board computer collects information from the various systems in the vehicle, including APC and DILAX SOM data.

Landside-Server
A landside server (FTP server) receives the collected vehicle data, such as APC data, so that programs such as DILAX Citisense can analyze it.

From a high-resolution 3D point cloud, data can be generated that makes counting even better. The sensor counts passengers with an accuracy of 99% while distinguishing between adults and children.

Nobody likes to board a full train or bus. With the new sensor in the DILAX APC system, valuable line utilization information can be displayed and forecast in real time. Via interfaces to apps, even passengers can use the real-time data for planning their route.

Privacy by design: Anonymity and security
Consistent data protection is needed in public spaces. We designed DILAX SLS-1000 with this in mind right from the start: it counts completely anonymously without a video image – and is highly accurate at the same time. This means that no technical detours are needed to anonymize data and ensure data protection.

Smart updates: With artificial intelligence
The DILAX SLS-1000 is designed to count not only bicycles and wheelchairs, in the future it will also detect strollers and luggage. The sensor is able to practice and learn this using an AI algorithm. New object classes can be integrated in sensors already in use by installing a firmware upgrade.

Extremely reliable: Can be used anywhere
The DILAX SLS-1000 counts reliably – even under difficult lighting conditions such as extreme darkness or overexposure. The counting quality does not suffer from a lack of contrast thanks to the high resolution. With its local memory, it can also work offline. Another advantage is the flexible installation; it can be positioned up to 1.5m away from the door.
